Storage Tips

Make your move simple and stress-free with our expert storage tips. From packing efficiently to organizing your unit for easy access, these practical suggestions will help protect your belongings and make the most of your storage space.

Bedding, Clothing, Curtains, and Linens
Keep your fabric items fresh by storing clothing, curtains, and drapes on hangers whenever possible. If hanging storage isn’t available, fold them neatly and place them in dresser drawers or cedar chests with bedding and linens for added protection.

Appliances
Before storing, thoroughly clean and dry refrigerators, freezers, and other appliances. Leave doors slightly open to prevent odors and moisture buildup. You can store lightweight items inside large appliances, just make a note of what’s inside. Stack boxes on top of sturdy appliances, ensuring all cooking equipment is clean and dry first.

Dishes and Glassware
Add a layer of packing material to the top and bottom of each box. Wrap each glass item individually, stack cups and bowls together, and stand plates and platters on edge. Keep fragile items near the top and fill gaps with paper to avoid shifting. Clearly label all fragile boxes and avoid placing heavy items on top.

Furniture
Place furniture on pallets, cardboard, or plastic sheeting to prevent damage. Disassemble beds and tables where possible, wrapping legs and delicate pieces. Store sofas and mattresses upright, and use dresser tops for stacking boxes. Keep upholstery off the floor and cover furniture with a light cotton sheet to protect from dust.

Books and Documents
Pack books flat to protect their spines and keep boxes off concrete floors to avoid moisture. Fill any empty spaces in boxes with packing paper, and don’t mix fragile items with books. Avoid overpacking boxes to prevent damage.

Holiday Decorations
Keep delicate ornaments in their original boxes when possible. Wrap each item in paper and wind light strands around cardboard before packing them in a box lined with padding.

Mirrors, Windows, and Glass Panels
Store mirrors, glass sheets, and screens upright, not flat, to prevent cracking. Use protective mirror or picture boxes, available for purchase at our office.

Tools
Clean and lightly oil metal tools before storing to prevent rust. Bundle long-handled tools like rakes or shovels together after cleaning and oiling them.

Bicycles and Metal Items
Prevent rust by wiping all metal parts with a cloth moistened with a small amount of machine oil before storage.

Mark Your Calendar
Create a moving timeline to stay organized. Tackle one space at a time to make your move stress-free and efficient.

Don’t Rush
Take time to load your storage unit carefully, proper organization ensures the best protection for your belongings.

Leave Some Room
Allow for airflow around the edges of your unit to promote ventilation. Stack same-sized boxes for stability and easier access.

Clear a Path
Leave an aisle down the center or side of your unit to easily reach all stored items when needed.

Think Outside the Box
Plastic storage bins make for a durable, reusable, and convenient alternative to cardboard boxes.

Use Quality Materials
Choose sturdy moving boxes and heavy-duty packing tape to secure your items and protect them throughout storage.

Plan Ahead and Get Organized
Start your move the smart way by making a detailed list of labeled boxes for quick reference. Try color-coding or numbering each box to stay organized. Gather all necessary supplies early, sturdy cartons, bubble wrap, sealing tape, markers, and protective covers, to make packing easier and more efficient.

Declutter Before You Pack
Use the month before your move to simplify. Donate gently used clothes, toys, or equipment, and toss anything broken or expired. Less clutter means fewer boxes and a smoother move.

Pack Smart and Securely
Stick to uniform box sizes for easy stacking. Fill boxes completely but avoid overpacking or leaving gaps, this prevents tipping or crushing. Use bubble wrap, towels, or paper to cushion items, and always seal boxes tightly with packing tape.

Distribute Weight Wisely
Pack heavier items like tools and books in smaller boxes and keep every box under 30 lbs. for easier handling and safer stacking.

Label Everything Clearly
Write clear labels on each box and keep a copy of your inventory list (with photos if possible) at home or on your phone. Mark all fragile boxes so they’re handled with care.

Clean and Prep Items Before Storing
Ensure appliances are clean and dry before packing. Secure movable parts with paper padding and keep doors wedged open while in storage to prevent mold and odors.

Strategize Your Storage Layout
Place frequently used items at the front of your unit and leave a walkway through the center so you can reach everything easily.
